UK scholarships for Indian students: how to build a shortlist
Build a UK scholarship shortlist from the courses you want to attend. A national scheme, a university award and a department award may have different rules, application steps and deadlines.

Use official directories to find the right provider
The British Council's funding hub links to opportunities including GREAT, Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships, as well as wider funding guidance. These are research starting points, not a statement that every scheme is open or that every Indian applicant is eligible.
For a university-specific award, go to the university's own scholarship page and check the course and intake. Record any requirement to apply for the course first or to make a separate scholarship application.

Compare opportunities using a short evidence record
Make one record per award and per institution where the rules differ. Use the provider's name and source date so you can revisit the terms when a new cycle opens.
| Field | What a useful record says |
|---|---|
| Who can apply | The exact nationality, residence, academic and other conditions. |
| Where it applies | The named university and eligible course or subject. |
| What it covers | Tuition, living costs or other defined support; unknown items stay unknown. |
| When to act | The institution's deadline and required preceding application steps. |
| Current status | Open only if the provider confirms it; otherwise unverified or closed. |
Use GREAT as a worked research example
The GREAT provider pages identify a specific academic cycle and participating universities. Start at the India page, then follow the relevant university's application instructions. Our GREAT guide explains the questions to check before adding that opportunity to a personal funding plan.

Spend application effort where the evidence fits
Illustrative example: one award covers your intended subject at your shortlisted university, but another names a different institution. Prioritize resolving the first award's remaining conditions before preparing two full applications. Similar award names do not make their rules interchangeable.
Do not select a course solely because a scholarship might be available. Compare the course fit and total cost without the award, then add a funded scenario if you receive an offer of support. Review both with your family or adviser before a major commitment.
